Holy Week and Easter
Holy Week & Easter is characterised by a number of processions, religious functions and exhibitions across Malta and Gozo. These events commemorate the passion of Christ and His resurrection.
The Holy Week starts a week before Good Friday, when processions of Our Lady of Sorrows (in Maltese Id-Duluri) happen through the streets of a good number of towns and villages. These days are not a time of celebration but a time of reflection for the many devote Catholics here in Malta. Traditions include: displays of the Last Supper, ‘seven visits’ on Maundy Thursday (continued till Good Friday morning) and the exchange of a ‘figolla’, which is an almond-filled pastry covered in icing sugar or chocolate.
